This is the first of a series of caches which are intended to celebrate some of the lovely trees here in the south west of England. This is a fairly straight forward cache with parking available fairly close to the cache placement.
This cache is placed on a byeway with a level, stoned path leading to the cache location. The only difficulty is getting to the exact location but should be accesible to most people.
This is the first of a series of caches celebrating trees in the south west - The idea is to find nice examples of trees both native and non-native and to pass on a little information on them to cachers.
The English Oak is native to the United Kingdom and is considered to be very wildlife friendly with 500 species of insects being associated with living in or on the Oak.
The latin name for the English Oak is Quercus robur.
The Oak can grow to about 130 feet (40m) and is thought to live for about 300 years and even after death they can provide a great habitat for a wide range of insects, birds and animals by providing shelter and food sources. They are a deciduous tree and grow well on all types of soil even poor or acidic soils. They produce acorns most abundantly in mast years which are about every 6 to 7 years and they are usually very fertile and easy to grow if you can beat the squirrels to them !!!
The Oak is one of the best timbers for construction and can be found as the main structural timbers in some of the oldest buildings in Britain. The Oak has been used in the construction of ships for centuries and was the basis for the great success of the navy in this country until metal ships started being made.
Initial inventory is an theoldspots FTF tag and a selection of swappable swag and if you take something please put something back ! Congratulations to ROADOWL and THE KOSCIOWS for a combined FTF
