Our Third Traditional on the Great Taste Trail. Interesting historical information on the sign nearby. Please return the rock and the container carefully to avoid cache creep. This could easily disappear into the undergrowth if you aren't careful.
TASMAN'S GREAT TASTE TRAIL
When complete, the whole trail - including a section in the Motueka River Valley - will cover a distance of 162-175km and will run from Nelson Airport, to Richmond, out to Tapawera, along the Motueka River Valley to Riwaka, and then back to Richmond through Motueka and Mapua.
Our caches on this part of the trail are on the now open Coastal Route from Nelson to Mapua. This part of the trail is extremely popular during the summer months with the locals. You can expect muggles coming at speed from either direction.
There interesting information signs along the way describing the history of the area.
COTTERILL'S LANDING
In 1842 John Cotterell and fellow surveyor H.W. Burt established a regular boat service from Nelson to what became known as Cotterell's Landing. Sited about 150 metres north of this cache, the twice weekly ferry was one of Nelson's first transport services and it meant that people could avoid hours negotiating the swampland between Waimea and Nelson. A small wharf allowed the boat to load and unload passengers and goods.
