Geocache Description:

A simple find, this 450ml sistema container is easy to get to in a public reserve along the shores of Lake Wanaka. Cache is large enough for trackables.

Wanaka Station Reserve is the original homestead site of a huge colonial farm.  The grounds were bequeathed to the people of Wanaka by the Sargood family who were in possession from 1912.  Accessed either by road or by walking along the shores of the lake, these grounds are well laid out and have mature plantings of English Walnut, Giant Redwood, Weeping Douglas Fir, Himalayan Cedar, English Oak and a lovely avenue of Lime tress that used to lead up to the grand wooden homestead (since destroyed by fire but the foundations are still visible).
A great place to have a picnic, take in the vista and imagine how life was for the early colonists as the information board gives lots of fascinating history of the farm and the surrounding region. When listed, cache contained a 1940 and a 1950 brass New Zealand penny coins.
