I don't know what this place is really called but "The Quarry" is what we have always known it as. It is a busy place that has many and varied uses that have kept us entertained over the years we have lived here. But we have never figured out what this shelter was originally built for.
While the area is now in grass for years it had several piles of gravel so trucks had easy access to it. We have watched in facination as different groups used the face to teach abseiling and the manoeuvring of rescue capsules with people in them down.
The police checkpoints are particularly interesting as often all the voices carry round the valley. It is quite a strategic place because they can't be seen before coming out of the bend at either end. These are regular events over the summer and seem to start on the same day as college finishes - hmmm!
Along with the fun there have been the tragedies - on the road and with cars upended in the river. Too many.
One year the army helicopter on its annual drug hunt landed here to refuel. That was particularly exciting.
