Geocache Description:

Halton Castle is one of only a few Norman castles to survive in Cheshire.

The first castle on this site was a motte and bailey timber castle built by Hugh Lupus, Earl of Chester, in circa 1070.  No trace of this original building survives today, with numerous alterations being made to the castle over the next few centuries.  By 1650 the castle was said to be "very ruinous", though the gatehouse remained in use as a court and was rebuilt in 1738.  Today it is used a pub, through which you can access the interior of the castle grounds.

While you're here, have a walk around the castle to see the fine views of the Mersey estuary, and on a clear day you can see the mountains of North Wales, the Pennines... and Asda.

The cache is a 35mm film canister.
