| At 781 feet, Mount Caroline Livermore is the highest point on Angel Island and a popular destination for visitors. There are a few locations with benches and picnic tables affording fantastic views of the Marin, San Francisco and other lands around the bay area. |
Imagine, though, if this island were like much of the surrounding areas, populated with housing, private roads, No Tresspassing signs and no or limited access to this island to the general public and visitors from around the world. This was the concern of Caroline Livermore, when she wrote in the Marin Independent Journal wrote in editorial alarm in January 1934:
| “Our picnic spots are nearly gone. ‘No Trespassing’ signs are posted all over. We must act if we believe in building for the future. Papermill Creek, inviting bay beaches, from Tiburon to Santa Venetia, must be saved. No community on earth is more favored than Marin with the wealth and beauty of potential playgrounds. If we don’t acquire some of these lands, the opportunity will surely slip away from us.” |

| In the 1930s Caroline Livermore, along with Sepha Evers, Portia Forbes and Helen Van Pelt formed the Marin Conservation League to preserve and protect Marin's natural richness. Among their accomplishments were the preservation of Mount Tamalpais, thwarting a plan to fill Richardson Bay by bulldozing the Tiburon hills into the bay and having Angel island preserved as a California State Park. |
Later regarding their efforts Caroline would state:
| "We really saved that from becoming a cheap Coney Island, which a Nevada firm hoped to develop" |
