La Bonneterie a longtemps été l’activité principale de Troyes et de son agglomération. De nombreuses usines dressaient leurs cheminées dans le ciel Troyen et si en 1914 il y avait plus de 100 cheminées dans l’agglomération, il n’en reste plus que 19 à ce jour.

Textile manufacturing was the main activity of the city of Troyes for a long time. Many plant’s chimneys stood in the sky of Troyes and even there was more than 100 chimneys in Troyes in the year 1914, only 19 are still remaining today.

Les Cheminées d’Usine : #08 CORNUEL
La société Cornuel, spécialiste de la soie en tricot (bas, gilets, caleçons, écharpes, cravates) naît à Paris en 1820.
Au début des années 1900, cette société s’associe avec la société Troyenne Bullot et Jacob et installe une unité de production sur la rive droite du canal de la Seine (actuellement Avenue Chomedey et Avenue Vanier).
Ce vaste ensemble de plain-pied à la façade harmonieuse dominée par une cheminée est dirigé successivement par Albert Oudinet jusqu’en 1918, par la veuve Cornuel, jusqu’en 1934, cas unique d’une femme à un tel poste à l’époque, puis par Mr Ginzburger jusqu’en 1950.
Dans les années 1950, l’utilisation massive de la Rayonne, matériau synthétique moins cher et plus facile à travailler, va entraîner le déclin des bas de soie et obliger la société à se reconvertir dans la fabrique de pull over « fully fashioned », c'est-à-dire sans découpe ni couture, jusqu’au début des années 1970.
L’activité cessera en 1970 et depuis 1977 une enseigne de distribution de meubles et électroménager occupe le site Cornuel et a conservé la cheminée et la façade d’origine à nouveau visible depuis janvier 2010.

Cornuel company, specialized in knitted silk (stockings, vests, leggings, scarves, ties) was born in Paris in 1820.
In early 1900, the company teamed up with the trojan Jacob and Bullot Company . They install a production unit on the right bank of the canal de la Seine.
This vast unit with a harmonious façade dominated by a fireplace is succesively directed by Albert Oudinet until 1918, by the widow Cornuel, until 1934, a unique case of a woman in such a position at the time and by Mr Ginzburger until 1950.
In the 1950s, the widespread use of Rayonne, synthetic material cheaper and easier to work with, will lead to the decline of silk stockings and force the company to convert to factory "fully fashioned"sweaters, without cutting or sewing, until the early 1970s..
Activity will cease in 1970 and since 1977 a famous distribution company of furniture and appliances occupies the Cornuel site and kept the fireplace and the original façade visible again since January 2010.
