Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Old Japanese Jail where aviatrix Amelia Earhart was thought to be held captive. The cache is hidden in one of the cells in the women jail block and I hope I have hidden it in Amelia’s cell.

The Old Japanese Jail was built in 1929 and was in use until the US descant on Saipan during Second World War. It is located along Middle Road in Garapan, in a residential neighborhood in a very close distance from Sugar King Park and the CNMI Museum. This historical spot content main jail building, women jail block, mess hall used also as a torture room and two other structures right in the middle: old water dwell and underground Torture Chamber. All that remain of the structures are concrete and rusted metal.

The Main jail is a single row of different sized jail cells. Each of the 16 cells meant to house between 1-6 prisoners. The main jail has a lot of "historical graffiti” on the walls, both in English and Japanese. It is said that the jail held Japanese, Okinawan, and Chamorro prisoners. Most of the Chamorro prisoners were held for drinking alcohol, which was forbidden by the Japanese Administration.

The smaller cell building with 4 cells in it was most likely for the women. One of the hypotheses about mysterious disappearance of Amelia Earhart is that she was captured by the Japanese and was kept prisoner in this building for the last months of her life. You can find more about this version of Amelia Earhart destiny in a blog with some more links shared further in the text:
