St. Hugh’s Anglican Church, built in 1931.

St Hughs was built in 1931, quite late in the history of the town.
It was possible with a donation from Mrs Charles Angas of 500 pounds.
The congregation had first met in one of the rooms of the former Masonic Hall.
Dean Berry was the architect who was commissioned to design it and he accepted it just prior to going overseas. He developed a strong interest in mediaeval gothic churches in Cornwall.
He took a lot of notes on how similar design would be transposed to Angaston. He took great care in designing the church to keep costs down as it was soon after the Wall Street crash and the great Depression.

Inside the church is a lovely screen and four beautiful stained glass windows, 2 from St Faith’s at Collingrove and 2 are memorial windows.
The interior includes a finely carved rood screen separating the chancel from the nave.

Roger Jones has constructed and donated a finely crafted new pipe organ for this building. It has been placed on one side to the rear of the building with mechanical key and stop action and a French-style pedal board, the first constructed by an Australian organbuilder.
Most of the pipework is enclosed within glass doors that may be opened or closed.
The embossed façade pipes come from the 2ft octave of the Prestant 4ft. The pipe shades consist of embossed metal vine leaves. The manual keys have arcaded fronts.
