Union Chapel, built in 1844
Located on Penrice Road, the Chapel is one of the oldest churches in South Australia.
Seating 96 people, it was built with money from George Fife Angas, for use by all denominations.
Just eleven years later, a larger union Church was built in the main street, now the Zion Lutheran Church.
You can see the spire from the Chapel’s front door.
The timber floor had a baptismal cavity for Baptists.
When this building was no longer used as a church it was used for a lot of things over the years, and it ended up being used as a shearing shed.
In fact, the building was in pretty bad shape and has been restored between 1989-1994 and is widely used again by the community and hosts a range of functions.
The restoration was done based on old photographs and a print done by George French Angas, one of George Fife's sons.
