Geocache Description:

Look for a big rounded stone up on the mountain pass between the two fjords, Steingrímsfjörður and Bjarnarfjörður, on road 643. The stone is called Selkollusteinn after the beasty troll Selkolla.

Good place to park your car is soon after you get up on the mountain by a blue sign by the road saying Selkollusteinn. Look for a big rounded stone and head in its direction. You can have a look at 11 minutes long documentary fim made by Sigurður Atlason about Selkolla with subtitles in English.

Centuries ago a child was born in the northern half of the parish. A labourer and a maid-servant were sent to the prior recidence in Steingrímsfjörður to have the child christened. On the way the pair realised that this was their best change of fulfilling a mutual call of the flesh. So when reaching this great boulder they laid the baby down on one side and had theire fun on the other side. Having satisfied their lust they walked around the boulder to pick up the baby. But it showed no sign of life and was so evil-looking that they didn´t dare to touch it. Instead they ran in panic down the hill to the nearest farm. The story was not believed at first and men were sent to find the child, but all efforts were in vain. The baby had disappeared. Soon afterwards a large female was repeatedly seen in the vicinity of the stone and people believed that she was a malovelent spirit that had entered the baby. Her head resembed a seal's and she became known as Selkolla (literally: Seal's Head). Selkolla stole sheeps and terrorised the whole region for a long time.
