Geocache Description:

This cache will bring you to an interesting park with a lot of historical significance.

Marcus Garvey Park was called Mount Morris Park until 1973 when the city changed the name. "Mount Morris" is the focal point of the park. Razing Mount Morris was considered when the city was laying out the commissioners street grid in the 1830s. Local citizens protested and the hill was preserved as a park and opened in 1840. This was more than 20 years before Central Park Opened.

There is a historic cast iron fire watch tower on top of the hill near the cache location. This fire tower was of great significance when most buildings in the city were constructed of wood. There were several more of these towers throughout the city. Only this one remains. The fire tower has suffered from corrosion over the years and is in danger of collapsing.

You can find more info on the fire tower here: (visit link)
