Geocache Description:

The Dodder

The River Dodder is one of Dublin’s best known and most important rivers. The river rises in the Dublin Mountains and in its upper reaches it forms a reservoir system which is an integral part of the water supply to Dublin. It flows down through the suburban areas of Tallaght and Rathfarnham and through the city areas of Donnybrook and Ballsbridge before discharging into the Liffey Estuary at Ringsend. The lower section of the river is tidal up to Ballsbridge. There are a number of tributaries draining into the River Dodder with the significant ones being the Tallaght Stream, the Owendoher, the Whitechurch, the Little Dargle and the Dundrum Slang. The Dodder’s surrounding parklands are an extremely important amenity to Dublin and the river is widely used by fishermen and a variety of sporting and recreational interests over its 26 Km long course.

The Bridge

This bridge was once known as the Big Bridge, and carried not just the main road from Dublin to Rathfarnham, but – according to local legend – was a crossing for the Slí Chualainn, the ancient highway used by travellers even in the days of Saint Patrick to Wicklow and Wexford. However, the first record of a bridge built here was in 1381. In 1652 it was described by Gerard Boate in A Natural History of Ireland as a wooden bridge, and “though it be high and strong, nevertheless hath several times been quite broke and carried away through the violence of sudden floods.”

After three bridges had been demolished by the rushing river waters, between 1728 and 1765, the present Rathfarnham Bridge of one stone arch was built in 1765. The bridge was widened on the west side in 1953 and renamed Pearse Bridge in honour of the Pearse Brothers, Padraig and Willie.

Dodder Ramble

This cache is one of a series under the banner of “Dodder Ramble”. Hopefully it will complement the many existing caches along the Dodder and attract Geocachers to take a ramble along its banks and appreciate this terrific public amenity.

The Cache

The cache is on the border between the City of Dublin and Dublin South. The area is well serviced by public transport with buses 15B, 16 and 17 passing close by. The cache is a micro and contains only the log so BYOP. It is located far enough from the river to be safe for children. It is also a nice area for geo-hounds. Please replace the cache carefully.
