Geocache Description:

This cache is located near the Bankside sign at the side of SH1. Historically this area is significant for two reasons unearthed by the cache owner when researching the placement of the sign. There is safe off road carparking near the sign .

Railway Accident. On the 29 March 1907 there was a head on collision between a northbound troop train and a southbound special train that had not waited at Bankside station for the troop train to pass. Two people were injured and two horses killed in the accident .

Bankside Former WWII Fuel Depot. The fuel depot was originally built in 1942 as the main fuel store base for the “secrete” Te Pirita airfield, the site has been used as an aunauthorised dumping ground since the 1980s despite it being situated on private land owned by the Selwyn Plantation Board Ltd.

This site is historically significant as the Bankside fuel depot is the largest and most intact example of all the fuel tank protection bunkers built during the 1940s war effort in New Zealand. It is also one of only five bunkers remaining out of the 15 secret aviation fuel depots built. It is listed as a Heritage Site in the Selwyn District Plan and recently received a Category registration from the historic Places Trust. Further info can be found at www.historic.org.nz/TheRegister/.../RegisterResults.aspx?RID=7727

The fuel depot can be found approximately 500 metres heading west along Breadings Road from the Bankside sign on State Highway 1. There is a track off Breadings Road at approximately 150 metres west off Terrace Road. There you will find a fenced off area being remediated under security survellance .

The cache is a black camo screw top bottle containing log book stashnote and pencil.
