A scenic walk to a 400 to 500 year old Kaihikatea tree that is 66.5 meters high. According to the Department of Conservation (DOC) sign it is the tallest native tree recorded in New Zealand.
How did the cache get its name?
When our children were at primary school there was an annual camp for the older ones at the Kaniwhaniwha campsite. One of the activities was always a walk to the tree where this cache is located. It's an easy walk alongside a beautiful stoney bottomed stream. The kids loved it but somehow it became known over the years as "the walk to the dumb old tree". That name has stuck, being passed down word of mouth from child to child, and the younger kids can't wait for their turn to one day visit the dumb old tree.
Of course what the kids never realised is that the main reason for the walk was so that they would be so tired after a big day that the teachers and parent helpers would actually get a good nights sleep.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) say that this is a 6 hour return walk from the carpark.
The cache is a 1 litre sistema. Please take care to return it the right way up and cover.
