Geocache Description:

More Indian History. You can drive right to it. Lots of muggles at various times of day and seasons.

For uncountable centuries the Native American tribes dominated this region of the West. They were little affected in 1500 by the claim of Spain, that all of Colorado was theirs.
Centeries later, Spain was most unhappy to learn that France had staked its claim to all the lands north of the Red River. Nether country was exactly certain where the French considered the Red River, Spain, at the time, was absolutely sure that the Arkansas River was theirs, making the river ahead of you, the Rio Grand of that day.
As late as 1803 the various tribes, who roamed this area, could drank the water from the mineral springs on the north side, at the prison, (in land claimed by France) and then bathe in the hot springs, almost straight south, across the river (in the land claimed by Spain).
Like us today, the Indians believed, in the waters healing power. (Both places have disappeared after highway construction disturbed the ground in the 1950's)
They also massaged themselves with black oil from a steep 6 miles to the northeast, in present Garden Park (in land claimed by France)
All these ownership claims meant little to the residents until France negotiated the Louisana Purchase to America, doubling the size of the United States.
In 1806 Zebulon Pike arrived at this very spot during his "voyage of discovery,"exploring exactly had been purchased. Arriving here in the dead of winter only to be sorely disappointed to learn this wasn't the Red River. Here began a journey of great hardship for the 27 year old Pike and his band of exploriers.
