Geocache Description:

The call "Out" disheartens any player, even knowing they didn't make the play.

A "triple play" is an even rarer occurrence, when the fielding team manages to get three ‘outs’ in one play.
Unheard of is one player getting out three times in one play, until that is……the events that conspired to eventuate during the Deans Marsh B’s grand final of 1990 against the Lara Wildcats, as reported in the Geelong Independent, by the 3rd base coach, Mark "Southy" Southall.

The game was tied up at the bottom of the 9th, (isnt it always!) with one out, and runners on base 1 and 2.
Up at bat was John ‘Jonno’ Holland attempting to get his runners home for a win.
Keith ‘Dez’ had stumbled accidentally onto first after hitting a slow ground-ball to shortstop, hoping he hadn't burnt both he and Hugh ‘Hugo’ Stewart who also made it safely to 2nd.

With 2 strikes on him, Jonno connected for a left-field fly.
Knowing there was only one out, Hugo rightly hedged his bets close to base with an easily recovered lead off.
Dez thinking it was 2 out, took a long lead and with the base coach mum to advice, was quickly rounding second with a full head of steam, passing a stationary Hugo with a slightly bemused and confused look on his face.
It was at this point our Dez had his first inkling that something might be amiss.

Who knows exactly what words were exchanged in the heat of battle, but Hugo possibly made mention in passing to Dez that “it may only be one down mate, and that he should be a good-sport and tootle back to first-base quick-smart” or words to that effect.

After such an impressive lead off, he now had a lot of back-peddle to do before the ball made it in from the outfield.
But he didn’t.
Out at first.

But he was already out on a technicality as he had overtaken the preceding runner, an action which is rather frowned upon in polite circles.

Adding insult to injury; after returning from the overshoot at 2nd, Dez in his haste to rewind his misadventure failed to touch base on the way past Hugo.
I'm not sure how the scorers actually statted "crossing the diamond" but to my mind it is still to this day unheard of.
But it is I'm sure, an oft retold, and unlikely to be repeated event, that will remain forever etched into the annals of Baseball history.

After repeated retrievals from the wombat hole over the past years despite pleas to NOT replace the cache down the handy hole, eventually it went archeologically too far. Having resigned myself to the inevitable fate of the container (and much therapy later) I have dummed it down a bit. On a GZ related theme started by Sog12 and Bernie: a wombat Joke.
Q) What kind of Wombat can jump higher than a car?
A) Any kind, cars cant jump.
