Geocache Description:

One of a series of simple, easy to find, caches at railway stations in and around the Manawatu.

Welcome aboard the Foxton-Palmerston tram service to Palmerston! Last stop Foxton, next stop Carnarvon.

I actually have no idea where this station was. It is a long flat straight and none of the descriptions nail it down precisely enough. This station was placed somewhere near here to serve Motuiti Pa, a local Māori village, 530m north of here. When the railway replaced the tramway in 1876, the pa elders asked for a properly laid-out township and a shelter shed for the railway. In 1879 the stop was moved from it's original site 600m further north, they got the shelter shed but no township. And now there is not even a pa.

I have placed the cache here as often stations were placed at road junctions (and this is Motuiti Road, after all), guessing that it was moved here from the pa. However it may have been moved from 600m further north to the pa. If you know the true story I'd love to hear from you.

The land here is comprised of wide open flat sand dune lands. Tussocks and grass. Laying the rail here was easy. Further on, between Carnavon (Himitangi) and Palmerston there are large swamps and dense bush forest.

Motuiti Pa station was pulled out in 1959 when all the other stations and the rails were removed.

The cache is a 200ml honey pot. FTF gets to FTF a new TB. Parking is terrible. Please be careful!
Good luck!
