Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Girdwood Glacier Ranger Station. Open 9am-5pm. M-F

This is one of three management stations for the Chugach National Forest http://www.fs.usda.gov/chugach/. Come in and enjoy the views, learn a bit about the wildlife and floral in the area, and maybe plan your caching adventures along one of the many beautiful trails they manage.

Only available during open hours, 8-5, M-F.

Rv's welcome, also great parking @ the gas station .2 miles away @ the hi-way.

The Glacier Ranger District is one of 3 Ranger Districts on the Chugach National Forest. (Cordova Ranger District is to the east; Seward Ranger District is west) The entire Forest is about 5.5 million acres; the Glacier District is between 1/3-1/2 of that total, although a significant portion of area is under ice. The District’s eastern boundary runs from just east of Columbia Glacier, south to Latouche Island; the western boundary runs from Mt Alpenglow south to Grandview and the watershed divide between the Kenai and Prince William Sound. The district manages recreation sites, fish and wildlife habitat, cultural, botanical, mineral and other forest resources, and operates the Begich Boggs Visitor Center on Portage Lake. Most of the western half of Prince William Sound (PWS), with its tide-water glaciers and steep-sided fiords, is a Wilderness Study Area. There are 7 public use cabins (6 in PWS); 4 campgrounds, about 60 miles of trail, including some of the Iditarod National Historic Trail, a handful of day use sites, gold-panning areas, gravel pits, fishing ponds, Whistle Stop sites, and snowmachine areas. Hunting, trapping, berry and mushroom picking, and firewood collecting are all allowed, although some activities require permits or licenses.

A special thank you to the Glacier Ranger Station; who graciously allows, and added to this cache :)

This cache loves TB "coins", lets move them all over the place from here.

This area is a wonderful place for caching in all seasons. It's beautiful lush forests which are covered in pillowy green mosses during the summer, and it's clean white drifts of snow in the winter, make this a scenic treat of eye candy while enjoying your caching adventure in Alaska.

The Girdwood Glacier Ranger Station cares for many trails. Two of the most widely used and scenic trails are the "Winner Creek trail", in Girdwood, which includes strolls through lush full rain forests and amazing views from it's working hand tram, and the "Trail of Blue Ice" in Portage Valley, which is wheelchair accessible and winds around glacier erratics that have been left behind and through a valley that was forged by Portage Glacier, both of which are saturated with caches.

As you enjoy the views from in the Ranger Station or out on the deck, Keep in mind the land change that occurred here during the March 27Th 1964 Alaska Earthquake. It sank over 6ft during the magnitude 9.2 shaker(the largest in North American recorded history). At another location less than .5 miles away, also with a good parking spot, is a wonderful Earth Cache; GC2FWR which will explain more, and provide a simple stroll with a 1star Terrain rating.

FTF goes to: southeastalaska, with li1gray a close second :).

Welcome to Alaska, The Last Frontier.
