An enigmatic cache Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Boomshanka: Time for this one to go as things have changed with the emulator rendering it difficult (if not impossible) to solve. Many thanks for the logs and FPs [:)]. The cache container has been removed from GZ (thanks BeeTwinkle).

Geocache Description:

It’s late May in 1944 and your long shift of deciphering Enigma messages at Bletchley Park comes to an end for another day. You’re about to turn in, exhausted, but then you hear from the Commanding Officer (CO) at ‘Hiltingbury A’ camp in Hampshire. Apparently, he has found a seemingly random code relating to the location of a mysterious ammo box hidden within a mile of the camp, and he needs your help. You recalled that there were around 10,000 (mainly American and Canadian) troops stationed in camps (A,C,D & E) in woods to the north and south of Hiltingbury Road. The troops were amassing there in preparation for Operation Overlord ie. ‘D-Day’ that was to take place next week (6th June 1944). By now, the Hiltingbury camps were secure, with strict controls on movements in or out. Several dignitaries had visited in recent weeks, including King George VI, Winston Churchill and General D. Eisenhower.

Intrigued by this secret code and hidden cache, you race to rendezvous with the CO. As you drive along Hiltingbury Road, you are surprised by the sheer number of military vehicles parked up on either side (there must be thousands of them) and you noticed that the pavements were covered in gravel or clinker to protect them from tank and armoured vehicle tracks. You turn into Sherwood Road and park up next to the large water tower surrounded by tents. The place was alive with troops, all conversing in their North American twang. Culinary smells waft out of the mess tent as you walk by, sparking a pang.

You're quick to meet the CO and he hands you a slip of paper with the following message on it:

GEOT UWAN KCED JFXL BUJZ EJZC VBTC RDKS PUGQ JEBJ GVGY JTMJ XNOZ OWYY VEGQ

You soon recognise this as Enigma code and your fatigue evaporates as adrenaline kicks in. “What do you need to crack this code?” asked the CO. “Well, ah, I need to find a (virtual) Enigma machine and then source the code book. Once I have these two items, the real work can begin. I’ll need to follow the specified Enigma procedures absolutely to the letter”. Your eyes locked with the CO’s, “Godspeed” he whispered, before reminding you that all code breakers are sworn to secrecy about the deciphering and cache location.

As you leave the camp gates, your eye catches a bystander who then approaches. “Looking for treasure?” he muttered, before highlighting that “everything you need to get started is right here, but sometimes things aren't always black and white”. A momentary silence fell as Agent Boomshanka then raised his collar, tipped his hat and disappeared into the night… leaving you to get cracking on the code...
