Mill Gardens is open from 8am – dusk (ish). Check the entrance boards to make sure you won't get locked in!
History of Mill Gardens
During Victorian times, Mill Gardens was an eyesore for the people of Royal Leamington Spa. From 1832, the area consisted of the settling beds for the town’s private water supply and a mill. The view of the mill was deemed so offensive that the riverbank in Jephson Gardens – to the north of the river - was lined with trees to screen it from the eyes of visitors to the town.
In 1896, Leamington Corporation took over management of Jephson Gardens and decided to buy the land south of the river. They demolished the mill, built a new suspension bridge (still in use today) and altered the riverbanks of the River Leam. Between 1901 & 1903, the Corporation created a boating lake from the old settling beds and built a new boat house. Both are still in use today.
Mill Gardens is now a part of riverside greenery that stretches from Newbold Comyn in the east to St Nicholas Park in Warwick to the west. There is a play area for Geokids but dogs are not allowed in it.
Watch out for muggles as this is a well-used area, especially during the summer. Take care of your Geokids as there is no fence along the river in this part of Mill Gardens.
