Residents of the three cities and two counties have been walking/biking the shores of the river for many years, but the formal trail was developed in recognition of the area's ties to the Lewis and Clark Expedition and in honor of Sacajawea, the Native American woman from the Lemhi/Shoshone tribes who acted as guide to the expedition.
