Geocache Description:

The Kawakawa (macropiper excelsum) is a small tree that grows throughout New Zealand.

Kawakawa is usually found on the edge of the bush, in partial shade. It grows up to six metres high and is a densely branched, aromatic tree with large, heart shaped, emerald green, fleshy leaves. The leaves are often eaten by the native looper moth, so most leaves will be riddled with holes. The Kawakawa tree is significant and sacred to Maori.

This is a good place for a break on the way to Wainui Falls. A place to admire the tree ferns, the view, to make sure you can identify a kawakawa when you see one - - and to grab a cache. This can be a busy place at times so watch for muggles.
