This cache is hidden on a small hill just north of Craigmarloch Bridge on the Forth & Clyde Canal. It’s well worth walking the extra hundred yards or so to the top of the hill, where you’ll get a great view of the Kelvin Valley, and of the line of the Antonine Wall on the hill across the canal. But you also get to look back in time to the earlier days of the canal ...
Below the cache site lie the ruins of Craigmarloch Stables. These housed the horses used during the construction of the canal, and later, horses that towed boats along the canal would rest here. The stables were originally built nearer to the canal, before the builders discovered the ground was too boggy and the stables were sinking! So, they were re-built where they stand today. Several attempts have been made to buy the stable building and convert it into a house, but the cost has proved too much. If I win the lottery, I’ll do it :-).
You can also see the path that the horses would have taken from the stable to the canal, lying next to a narrow strip of water. This is a feeder that carries water from Banton Loch, further north, down to the canal.
Anyway, back to the cache. Head to the trees near the cache however you please (there are several routes), but when you approach the trees do not cross the fence for the final few metres – to do so would be dangerous. Instead, enter the trees from the East.
This is the first geocache that young Lucy has hidden. The box contains swaps that will appeal to children, so if you can, please put child-friendly swaps back in. There’s also a trackable there. And finally, Lucy has put a little reward into the cache for the FTF – she hopes you like it, whoever you are!
