You're looking for a small tube. I recommend you bring tweezers to extract the log.
There is free parking at the visitor centre nearby (N 53 56.380 W 002 19.816).
From the car park walk to the centre of the village. Turn left onto the Hellifield road at the village stocks and approach the church yard by crossing a small beck.
There are plenty of footpaths around the village if you want to explore further. The church is worth a look inside particularly Pudsey's tomb. There is also a tea room and a pub if you're that way inclined.
