Before the East Arm wharf precinct was developed, much of the live export of cattle took place from near here at Stokes Hill Wharf.
Occassionaly a steer, bull or heifer would escape. One of the ways the great escape took place was by them jumping over the gangways as they were being loaded and taking a dive into the harbour. Some became stuck in the mud flats and were taken out on the next tide to feed some lucky crocodiles.
Some however occaissionally made it ashore at places like GZ and then wandered into the city. While the days of loading cattle at the wharf here may have passed, there are still the odd reports of livestock wandering the streets of the city. Who knows, perhaps they are free-range relatives of these escapees.
