Planes, Trains and Automobiles Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

sgtzara: Time to say goodnight to this one. It's a popular viewing spot and it seems that anything magnetic keeps on getting knocked off the bridge unwittingly by sightseers.

Have pondered an alternative hiding method but failed to come up with any ideas.

94 finds in circ. 2 1/2 years - thanks for finding.

Geocache Description:

A quick park and cache located at a vantage point where you will see Planes (George Best Belfast City Airport), Trains (Sydenham Railway Station) and Automobiles (Sydenham By-Pass).

We're all geocacher's, right?  So I guess we're already halfway towards being a bit of a geek/nerd.  Here's a cache that will cater for that geekish/nerdy nature in us.

Ground Zero: The cache is located on a footbridge which runs over the Sydenham By-Pass.  It offers excellent views of George Best Belfast City Airport, Sydenham Railway Station and of course the Sydenham By-Pass itself.

Planes (George Best Belfast City Airport)

Sydenham Airport was established by Shorts beside its Belfast factory at Sydenham, Belfast in 1937. It is a single runway airport and became Belfast's main civilian airport from 1938 to 1939. The airfield was requisitioned by the Royal Navy during the Second World Way and named HMS Gadwall. RAF Nutts Corner then became Belfast's main airport (while Aldergrove would later become the primary airport in Northern Ireland). The Sydenham airfield continued to be used for military purposes until the 1970s, after which it was used by Shorts. In 1983, following interest from airlines and customers, the airfield was opened for commercial flights as Belfast Harbour Airport (subsequently Belfast City Airport and now in its current guise as George Best Belfast City Airport).

Trains (Sydenham Railway Station)

Sydenham Railway Station is located in the townland of Ballymisert in East Belfast and is within walking distance of George Best Belfast City Airport.  The station is unstaffed, and opened on 1 November 1851.  There are two platforms in use trains stopping here are either heading for Bangor or Belfast.

Automobiles: The Sydenham By-Pass (A2)

The A2 Sydenham Bypass is a vital section of the Belfast Metropolitan Area’s strategic highway network and links Belfast City Centre to Bangor and the North Down area. The A2 Sydenham Bypass carries upwards of 50,000 vehicles per day and is regarded as a ‘bottle neck’ and a major source of delays, particularly in the peak traffic periods.  In fact, when you think about it, it’s probably one of the most mentioned phrases on local radio.

The Cache Container: The cache is a magnetic nano.

Parking: The cache is NOT available if you are travelling citywards along the Sydenham By-Pass.  It can only be accessed from the following locations:-
  1. When travelling countrywards along the Sydenham By-Pass, park in the layby at N 54° 36.557 W 005° 52.734.  It is often used by taxi drivers/people waiting to collect people from the airport but you'll normally always get parked.
  2. Park along Inverary Drive N 54° 36.531 W 005° 52.666 (please park considerately and do not obstruct access for local residents).
