Geocache Description:

This is a little guy carefully hidden to show you a nearby tree.

This is the second in a series of caches that I am using to show the students in my OSU arboriculture course (and anybody else who is interested) current and past tree care practices.  If you look at the tree located nearest to this cache, you will notice that it has a cavity on the south side of its trunk that has been filled with concrete.  At one time, filling cavities was common practice, and concrete was not unusual as a filler.  In time, however, arborists noticed that the tree, as a living organism, moves in the wind.  Concrete doesn't move very well and it is abrasive, so as the tree moves with the wind, the concrete further injures the inside of the tree around the cavity.  Thus, concrete is no longer recommended as a cavity filler.  In fact, filling cavities is only a cosmetic treatment that helps us humans feel better.  It does not help the tree at all.  Can you imagine how difficult it will be to eventually remove this tree with the concrete inside?!

This cache is in a location that sees lots of muggles much of the time.  Stealth will be required to log it!!  Be sure to put it back exactly as you found it.

Congratulations to gururyan for FTF!!
