Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery is a coldwater fish hatchery which means it raises fish that do best in water temperatures below 60 degrees. Species currently in production at this facility are rainbow trout, brown trout, and brook trout.
Brook trout are green to brown in basic color, with a distinctive marbled pattern of lighter shades across the flanks and back and extending at least to the dorsal fin, and often to the tail. A distinctive sprinkling of red dots, surrounded by blue haloes, occur along the flanks. The belly and lower fins are reddish in color, the latter with white leading edges. Often, the belly, particularly of the males, becomes very red or orange when the fish are spawning.

About the cache:
You can access the nature trail from two points. The closet is about 75' from the back north corner of the Visitor Center (just past the Employees Parking sign). The second is by crossing a small bridge down by Hatchery Creek (public fishing area). No matter which you chose, park at the Visitor Center. The nature trail begins/ends at these two locations. The cache containers are large enough for small trade items and trackables. These are not designed to be that hard to find, but instead to lead you down a nice visit in the woods.
Only cache between 7am - dusk...no night caching. The Visitor Center is open daily 8am-4pm.
Remember: You are on a nature trail so always use caution...you are now in the wildlife's backyard.
I will be a volunteer host at the center between Feb-Sept 2013. Please stop in and say "Hi" if you have the time.
Enjoy and be sure to bring a pencil with you.
Placed with permission.
