Geocache Description:

Cache is not at posted coordinates, but within short walking distance. Bring your own pen. Ninja-like stealth required. Puzzle is one of four in a related video game series.

Ready Player One? is a trivia-based puzzle cache inspired by the novel of the same name. The futuristic novel highlights a culture that has become culturally obsessed with the virtual world. Within this virtual gaming platform there is an easter egg, hidden by the game designer, that promises fame and fortune to the one individual that finds it first.

Our puzzle cache consists of five trivia questions based on 1980s pop culture including those from the music, movie, television, and video game categories.

I have been long fascinated by the notion that geocaching is an overlay of real life, real people, and real locations. We search for puzzles or hidden containers in and around people that are oblivious to our pastime. This is not another shopping center cache— the retail space, pedestrians, and vehicles are all obstacles to navigate within our virtual game space. So are you Ready Player One?

Review this outline of the game playing experience:

  1. To play the trivia on a mobile device, you will need a smartphone or similar device that is capable of scanning QR codes. There are numerous free apps available to scan QR codes. Scan the QR code image above to receive the first question.
  2. To play the trivia on a desktop, simply click the QR code to begin.
  3. Your smartphone will display the first question and three multiple choice answers.
  4. Select one of the answers. There is only one correct answer per question.
  5. If you answer the question incorrectly, you will receive a new question to answer.
  6. If you answer the question correctly, you will receive a link for the next question.
  7. There are five levels (questions) to this game. Upon answering the fifth question correctly, you will receive the coordinates to the final cache container.

Consider the following guidelines when playing this game:

  1. This game is inspired by the novel; although, the trivia questions in the game are not specific to the novel or the plot. The book is not required reading nor will it provide any type of advantage.
  2. There are hundreds of base questions to this game.
  3. The questions are completely randomized at each level, so each gamer will have a different set of questions.
  4. The multiple choice answers are shuffled so the correct answer is never in the same slot.
  5. If you don't get the question right, simply try again. You will be provided with a new question.
  6. There is no time limit to each question, so feel free to phone a friend or research the question with your smartphone.
  7. There is a varying degree of difficulty to the questions, from the commonplace to the obscure factoid.
  8. If you find an error with a question, please let me know. It was time consuming to research, create, and format all of these questions (and I'm a perfectionist).
  9. Please exercise stealth in searching for the final cache.

And lastly:

  1. In true geek-form, there is a hidden easter egg within my game.
  2. There are specific questions that are flagged as "nerd-alerts".
  3. If you answer one of these questions —you are a true nerd of the 1980s, and— you will receive a clue to locating the hidden easter egg QR code.
  4. This hidden easter egg is considered a bonus level and is not required to find the final cache; although, you will have serious bragging rights.
  5. Once you find the easter egg, scan the QR code to submit your initials for inclusion on the Easter Egg Hall of Fame.
  6. Should you discover this easter egg, please keep the location secret. Remember, you earned the nerd-alert. Be proud of your inner geek!
