Fantail's Rest Traditional Cache

This cache is located on the walking track to Lake Daniels. A brilliant walk through native New Zealand forest in pristine condition. There are no public roads and the area has never been logged.
The track to Lake Daniels is untouched, old growth forest, probably much the same as it has been for hundreds of years. Other than the track itself it is completely undisturbed.
It really is a magical place to visit. Practically everything is covered in a thick layer of green moss. Even very old fallen logs are completely covered. Where they have fallen across the track only a small piece is removed to act as a gateway. It is a place where one might expect to see elves and goblins or something from The Lord of the Rings.
DOC maintenance workers keep the track in excellent condition and many former boggy bits have had raised wooden walkways to protect the environment from walkers trying to keep dry feet. The track itself is easy with minor undulations rather than hills to climb.
It is one of the most enjoyable places I have ever been. The walk can be taken in part or to Lake Daniels easily in about 3 hours. There is a DOC hut at the lake with good accomodation. I recommend overnighting there. Take bug spray ...
You are looking for a black screw top container with a log book in a ziplock bag. BYO pen.
The cache was given it's name when we stopped briefly to rest and look about. Within moments tiny birds appeared including fantails, followed by robins, riflemen and tomtits. They are amazingly small ands plentiful. DOC has a major program trapping introduced predators. When trapping programs have been run in specific areas there is an immediate increase in bird numbers.
