When the enormous one-ton steel fire bell first arrived in Pasco in the early 1900’s it posed quite a problem. After numerous attempts involving wagons, crowbars, and blocks the huge bell was finally set into place. Once the bell was rung, police and firemen were informed of the emergency and rushed to the scene. Former fire chief McGhee recalled that “the first firemen to the scene of a fire received $5 – provided he had the firehose cart with him.”
