(The cache is not at the posted co-ordinates)

Halfway between the Glorieta de Bilbao and Plaza de Chamberí is a place with no name, but for many decades the locals have known it as the Plaza de Los Chisperos. The name is related to the monument erected in the Plaza and is a tribute to the Spanish "Saineteros" (farcical playwrights).

The word "Chispero" (spark) may originate from before the fifteenth century, at which time various guilds were being established around Madrid. These guilds would later become occupations and professions. Many of the local streets are named after the guilds that formed in them, for example; Esparteros, Latoneros, Cuchilleros, etc.

The "Chisperos" were the blacksmiths and many settled in the Maravillas borough and were even mentioned by Fernandez de los Rios in his Guide to Madrid, when he cited the "chispero Juan Manuel Malasaña" as a defender of the city against the French. The Maravillas borough is where the guild of iron craftsmen is located.

The monument is the work of Lorenzo Coullaut Valera (1876 - 1932), a renowned architect, who has other major works in Madrid, including the monument to Cervantes in Plaza de Espana.
