The "Monasterio Real de la Visitación de Nuestra Señora", the Royal Monastery of the Visitation of Our Lady, of the nuns of the The Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary is commonly known by the name "Salesas Reales".

The Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary was founded in 1610 by Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Jane Frances de Chantal in Annecy, Haute-Savoie, France.

The Order of the Salesas Reales was assisted greatly in 1748 by Queen Barbara of Braganza, wife of King Ferdinand VI, when she constructed their first convent as a school and home for young women. The nuns were eventually evicted when, in 1870, it became the Palace of Justice.

The nuns settled in their current monastery in 1880, design for them by architect Francisco de Cubas based on the project of Federico Aparici.
