A cache too far... Melaleuca Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Hoojar: Well, this cache has not been found for a number of years, and sadly I feel this means that it has gone. A rarely found cache, but no longer.

Geocache Description:

On 17 November 2006 I hid a cache in the wild depths of South West Tasmania. Upon returning home, I was told that it could not be published because of the newly enforced proximity rule. The cache code would have been GCZHP8.

In 2009 another cache was placed nearby. I left a note on the cache page about my cache. Nothing happend for months. Years. And then late 2012 came around. 'Wilco' contacted me. Apparently as a pilot for Par Avion they fly here regularily, and would be willing to maintain my cache. A few weeks later 'Gamma Dei' contacted me. They were walking in the area soon and were willing to look for my cache. How exciting!

Come early 2013, and my cache is found! After laying dormant for over six years, Gamma Dei was able to find the cache and sign the log book as a FTF. Now it only seemed fair that with a maintainer and a finder, I should approach a reviewer and get the cache published. Whilst the original name was 'A cache too far... Melaleuca,' I think it has now proven to be too far and too long!

Below is the description from my original cache page...

"A cache located deep within the isolated South West of Tasmania.

Melaleuca is a tiny mining settlement deep within the South West National Park of Tasmania, within the World Heritage Area. Melaleuca consists of a boat ramp, air strip, 2 houses and a Tin mine. There is nothing else.

The only access to the area is via airplane, boat, or a 7 day walk (the South Coast Track from Cockle Creek) or a 4 day walk (the Port Davey Track from Scott's Peak Dam).

The cache was placed during a recent trip to the area by our Rover Crew for my Rambler's Award. We took the 7 day walk in option, followed by the 4 day walk out.

The cache is centrally located for those who arrive by sea or air. Keep your swaps small and light for those who choose to walk to the area.

Make sure you spend some time exploring this amazing part of the world!

Enjoy your trip, we certainly did!"
