A short walk on the South West Coast Path to mound on which Mountbatten Tower stands. Stunning views to the seaward side and to the West Cornwall and Drakes Island. Turn to the North and you have the Royal Citadel.
The location of our first ever multi -cache is on the grounds of former Royal Air Force Mountbatten. The history of Mountbatten can be traced back to the Bronze Age but it is the latter years with the extensive quarrying supporting the building of the HMNB Devonport threatening the Tower. Following a petition from 53 leading citizens to the Admiralty, Lord Morley, the landowner, imposed restrictions on quarrying thereby saving the tower.
In 1917 the area of Mountbatten was used as RNAS Cattewater undertaking maintenance of seaplanes. With the formation of the Royal Air Force Cattewater was renamed RAF Cattewater in April 1918. In 1928 following rebuilding the station became RAF Mountbatten. The main reason for the new station was to provide a base for flying boats to defend south-west England. The first squadron (No 203 Squadron Royal Air Force) became operational with the Supermarine Southampton.
During the Second World War saw the Royal Australian Air Force operating Short Sunderland flying boats. Sadly, 1986 the RAF withdrew from RAF Mountbatten.
The above co-ords are for the first noticeboard where you'll get some of the answers.
