Bannockburn Core Paths 1 - Ladywell Park
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This is our first set of hidden caches combined in a circular walk of about an hour that takes advantage of some of the upgraded and newly created paths around Bannockburn. If you plan to do all three caches in order, a waypoint is included for parking in the small car park in the upper Ladywell Park (accessed via Station Road and then Bruce Street).
The upgrade of the paths is part of the development of the Bannockburn Heritage Trail, completion of which is due to coincide with the anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn in 2014. The 20-year concept is that heritage trails, starting in Bannockburn through Balquhidderock Wood and into the City Centre, will become linked and eventually include the Eastern Villages, Torwood and the Larbert Hospital site.

We are very fortunate to have Ladywell Park as part of our walk to school and it is a great facility in Bannockburn split over a lower and upper park. It has good play areas, football pitches, playing fields, a BMX skills track and now upgraded paths throughout. The Bannock Burn passes through the lower park with a couple of footbridges so don’t forget to play pooh sticks while you’re there!
Ladywell Park was opened in July 1931 by Tom Johnston who at the time was MP for West Stirlingshire. He later became one of the most highly regarded Secretaries of State for Scotland, first in Winston Churchill’s wartime cabinet and then post-war Labour government.
The top of the park had been used for football since 1920 while the lower Ladeside Park was also used as an informal park prior to that. Moves to unite both areas under public ownership were started by the St. Ninian’s Parish Council and continued by the County Council after local government reorganisation in 1930. Facilities, especially for children, were upgraded and, as part of the opening ceremony, released one by one for the youngsters, and some not so young, to try out.

To get to Bannockburn Core Paths 2 – Thunder Bridge, you will need to follow the path down to the lower Ladywell Park, turn left, past the BMX skills track and out of the park via some stairs. You will then need to cross Pike Road before picking up another footpath.
