Geocache Description:

The Visalia Fair Mall was built on this site in 1964 and was the first enclosed air-conditioned shopping mall in California.

From the vantage point of the cache, looking south toward the mall, you would have Penney’s (JC Penneys now) on your right, Woolworth’s Department Store in the center of the mall building, See's Candy on the east end and an Auto Service Center to your left (where Union Bank sits now).  At the time it was opened, the mall had only one corridor which ran east and west, from where JC Penney’s is now to the current See’s Candy.

North of the property and unattached at the original time of construction was Gottschalks, Visalia’s upscale department store.

The above picture was taken from approximately the site of Union Bank today and shows See’s Candy (same location as today) in the foreground and Gottschalk’s Department Store in the background, where the parking garage sits today. This photograph must have been taken during the Christmas season as you can see the annual Christmas tree that was a Gottschalk’s tradition.

In September 1997, the mall finished it’s $30 million renovation. This added a 450 seat food court, an additional 38,000 sq ft of space and a 3-story parking garage. The additional square footage including two north-south corridors and a brand-new Gottschalk's two story department store.
