[ITA] Le locomotive a vapore del gruppo 740 delle Ferrovie dello Stato italiane vennero costruite in 470 esemplari tra il 1911 ed il 1922 e costituiscono il gruppo di vaporiere più numeroso e rappresentativo delle FS in servizio in tutto il territorio italiano, fino alla fine della trazione a vapore.
Il progetto, iniziato dalla Rete Adriatica qualche anno prima della nazionalizzazione delle ferrovie del 1905, nacque allo scopo di migliorare il servizio sulle linee del centro-nord. Le brillanti prestazioni e l'enorme versatilità delle 740 segnarono immediatamente il successo di queste locomotive, costruite in 203 unità fino al 1915 ed ulteriori 267 unità fra il 1919 ed il 1923.
Diffuse in tutto il paese, furono le dominatrici dei servizi merci sulla rete non elettrificata, venendo impiegate anche alla testa di convogli passeggeri soprattutto sulle linee più acclivi, ove la velocità massima di 65 km/h risultava comunque adeguata ai servizi da svolgere.
Con il declino del vapore, iniziato negli anni '50 a seguito dello sviluppo delle prime locomotive diesel da treno, le 740 videro ridurre progressivamente il loro ruolo, fino al definitivo accantonamento alla fine degli anni '70.

[ENG] The 740 series of steam locomotives of the Italian State Railways counted 470 specimens built between 1911 and 1922 and is the largest group of Italian steam engines, in service throughout the Italian territory, until the end of steam traction.
The project, started by the Adriatic Railway Network a few years before the nationalization of the railways in 1905, aimed to improve the service on the lines of Northern and Central Italy. The brilliant performances and the enormous versatility of the 740 model immediately marked the success of these locomotives, built in 203 units until 1915 and another 267 units between 1919 and 1923.
Spread throughout the country, these engines dominated the freight services on the non-electrified network, being also employed on passenger trains especially on the steeper lines, where the maximum speed of 65 km per hour was adequate to the services to be performed.
With the decline of steam, which began in the 50s after the development of the first diesel locomotives, the 740 series gradually saw a reduction in their role, until the final discontinuation in the late 70s.
