This turn-of-the-century subdivision was obviously developed by an aviation enthusiast. Note the names of the side streets as you travel to what could be New Zealand's smallest park and its tribute to the Catalina Flying Boat.
Catalinas were made in the 30’s and 40's and used extensively during WW2. The RNZAF had 56 which flew in the Pacific for reconnaissance, sea rescues and transportation of wounded soldiers. They all wound up crashed, scrapped or sold. Now one of the world's rarest planes, New Zealand now has the only operational passenger-carrying Catalina in the world, thanks to a group of dedicated enthusiasts. They lost their first plane when it had to be abandoned in the Pacific on its flight home, but found another working one, which safely touched down after a 92 hour trip, in 1994. The restored Catalina flew in air shows throughout NZ, but is presently grounded, awaiting rust removal from its wings.
