This is Nebo Cemetery. It is under the care of The Lamar County Genealogical and Historical Society. The cache is hidden near the marker for Revolutionary War soldier Thomas Stanford. The marker was placed on April 24, 1994 by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mr. Stanford (1756-1843) enlisted in the South Carolina military forces in 1776 and served in a number of engagements against the British. The exact date and burial site for Thomas Stanford is unknown. This marker is placed next to his daughter, Martha, who he lived with for a time. Ceramic Grave Markers Marble or granite tombstones were hard to come by in Lamar County before the turn of the century. Many people used flat sandstone rocks. Some had inscriptions, others had nothing to identify their loved ones graves. Several alternatives for tombstones were tried, such as cast metal and ceramic, and homemade concrete markers. To meet the need for and economically priced grave marker, William P. Loyd of Tremont ,Ms., began manufacturing monuments from potter’s clay. They received a patent on June 10, 1879. The marker consisted of two portions. The upper portion was flat and included the inscribing, while the lower portion was cylindrical, thrown in such a way that it’s top was pinched so the walls remained vertical in order to receive the marker. This marker was salt glazed in light gray, and it’s incising and decorating were in Cobalt blue. These markers have held up well and may be found in cemeteries all around Lamar County. The lettering is still just as blue as ever and can be easily read. Some of the bases are broken, probably by lawnmowers and falling trees. No night caching please.
