A brilliant view point on the Strathy Peninsular, giving 360 views of the North Coast. Easy short walk to grab.
Strathy Point is a wild rocky headland projecting into the North Atlantic. At the northern tip you can walk out to lighthouse. The coast around the Point is a dramatic mix of high cliffs, caves, arches and blow holes. It is the home, in spring, or the tiny, rare Scottish primrose. The cliffs provide nesting sites for a range of sea birds and the moorland the home of the Great Skua or Bonxies. Strathy Point is a excellent place for Whale watching; for example Orca, minky and pilot whales have been seen. The cache is about 2km from the Point. To get there take the A836 west from Thurso. Strathy village is about 32km from Thurso. Just as you leave the village, at the top of the hill, take the right turn signposted Strathy Point. After about 2km take a left turn. Park in a roadside pul- off about 500m from the junction or park another 500m at the end of the road, being careful not to block the car turn round area. The cache is situated on a rocky outcrop close to the road. It is easy accessed up a short farmer’s track. The ground is dry underfoot, walking though short heather and miniature juniper trees which are only a few cm high, but can spread to over a metre across. From the cache location you get a splendid 360 view, from the empty North Atlantic to Cape Wrath in the West, Ben Hope, Ben Loyal, the twin peaks of Ben Griam Mor and Ben Griam Beag, along the Caithness coast and across to Hoy in the Orkneys.
