An igloo, an entertainment venue, a family home, a relic to days gone by.
During World War 2 Rocky Creek was the site of of the biggest militrary hospital complex in the southern hemisphere, treating around 60,000 soldiers. After hostilities ceased the many buildings were dismantled or relocated. The only structrure remaining is the Rocky Creek Entertainment Igloo which was designed as a theatre, showing picture shows as well as Army concerts and dances. As the concrete floor was a little difficult for smooth dancing, lots of candle grease and talcum powder were used to combat this. Frank and Ellen Fraser bought the igloo in 1947 and raised their family of eleven children in it. Frank made cane furniture in part of it. The igloo was donated to the Atherton Shire Council in 1996 by the Frasers.
The GZ will lead you to the igloo. Please respect the signs not to enter the structure - it clearly is in a poor state of repair. Not only do you risk harm to yourself but you could be damaging a herigage building. There is no need to enter the building to locate the cache, but the cache is located near a place where you can peek into the igloo. If you peek inside imagine what it was like when the camp was inhabited by 5000 soldiers and 2000 staff, the noise and dust and excitement on dance night, the sounds of the band, the flicker of the picture show. And then imagine this igloo as home to Frank and Ellens eleven children, the squeals and yells of excited childrens games. Near the cache site you can see a bird cage - possibly the family pet?
