You are seeking a two stage multi cache that begins at the grave marker for Judge William Higgins Terrell. The final stage is a short drive in a nearby park.
William Higgins Terrell was born on May 24 1784 in Rockingham County, North Carolina. He died on October 15, 1857 in Tuscaloosa.
In 1817 William came to Tuscaloosa as a territorial judge. He was a district judge in Tuscaloosa County for many years. William served in the Alabama Legislature from the Tuscaloosa area in 1831. He was also the County Treasurer for more than 30 years.
William donated the two acres of land to be used for a meeting house where the present Bethel Church and cemetery are located.
William was the son of Henry Terrell who fought in the Revolutionary War. While living in Bedford County, Harry Terrell organized a volunteer company, of which he was Captain and they entered service March 12, 1776, joining the 5th Virginia Regiment. The unit saw service in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown. After his first service, he was made a Commissary Officer. Then he became a Major and raised a battalion. Henry died in 1797.
For his 3 years of service in the Virginia Continental Line, in 1813 Henry’s heirs were given land grants of 4800 acres in Georgia.
William Terrell married twice, his second wife Cynthia is buried next to him. They had 5 children, one of which, John Davis, is buried next to his parents. John Davis was born in Georgia and died in Bladen Springs, Alabama.
The three grave markers for the Terrells are becoming weather worn and difficult to read. To locate the final, gather information from the story as well as from the three Terrell grave markers.
