WELCOME TO THE WESTMORELAND HERITAGE TRAIL......The Westmoreland Heritage Trail runs along a section of the former Penn Central rail line, abandoned in 1972. A trip along this scenic trail is pleasant even on the hottest summer day, as you will find yourself enveloped by a lush deciduous canopy. portion of the trail runs along a small tributary that attracts various wildlife, and natural seeps can been seen in the limestone railroad cuts at various points along the trail. At its eastern end, in the town of Saltsburg the Westmoreland Heritage Trail connects to the West Penn Trail. The Westmoreland trail currently ends at State Highway 819 in Slickville but the Regional Trail Corporation hopes to extend it all the way to Trafford for a 22-mile rail-trail experience and connections to other trails.Driving directions to Saltsburg: Travel on US 22 to its intersection with PA 981 in New Alexandria. North on PA 981 about 8 miles to PA 286. Right on PA 286 and cross bridge. After 0.2 mile, right on Salt Street for 0.4 mile to the trail start near playground. PARKING AREA IS SHARED WITH THE WEST PENN TRAIL CONNECTION........your looking for a small pill bottle container ..............BYOP.........Room for very small trackables...............Kids will have a hard time getting past the playground.............Have fun .............
