Geocache Description:

This is one of the last reminants of a distillery from the original Sugar Cane Farmers that farmed the area.

Cpt Maxwell founded the farm, 'Canonby' on which the still is located from 1858. The sugar mill was erected in 1861. Canonby had the first Vacuum Pan to be imported to Natal in those times. The steamship that actually brought it to Umkomaas to deliver it actually ran aground in the Umkomaas River.

'Canonby' was forced to sell to Natal Plantations in 1867, it went insovent in 1868. It was taken over by Natal Land & Colonisations in 1869 then Natal Plantations again. Illovo Sugar bought 'Canonby' which had been bought in 1914 by Umkomaas Central Sugar Milling Company after it also liquidated. They shipped the mill to Beira in 1916.
Depending of the time of day, you might catch a glimpse of the last working Steam Engines in South Africa.
