Geocache Description:

The Shore road heading out of Portaferry is as nice a drive, walk or cycle as you will find.

About a mile and a half from Portaferry lies the "Lees Wreck".

The ship was built in Italy in 1923 and  launched as the "Carso".

"Carso" was captured by the Allies in 1943 and was used in the D Day landings as part of the Gooseberry Breakwater on Sword Beach.
After the war the ship was bought by the Breakers Yard "John Lee" operating from Ballyhenry Bay.

She was being towed into Ballyhenry Bay when she struck a reef and broke in two. The bow section was cut off and beached; the stern section remains in the channel.

The Cache is a small to medium sized tablock box filled with a load of swaps, aimed mainly at the younger generation. It won't be difficult to find, but then it's simply there to attract folk to another particularily pleasant part of the country and maybe learn a wee bit about the less well known history of Northern Ireland.

Ballyhenry Bay, GC1CJ7X by Hairytoeman is just up the road, and you will get better views of the wreck from there.

The roads around these parts are not the busiest in the world but caution, especially with the youngsters, should still be a priority.
