A cache placed within the boundaries of Union Township's Highland Cemetary. Please be respectful of the area during times of worship in the church nearby, and observe the posted hours of the cemetary.
On my way home from working at our family farm nearby, I remembered a cemetary nearby. I whipped out my smartphone to see if there was a cache there, in an attempt to procrastinate typing my Macbeth research paper on my laptop that I got for Christmas last year. Wow, I found a cemetary with no cache in it! Luckily, I had one in my vehicle. I ran out and placed the cache using my nearly ancient 2007 Garmin eTrex Legend, which coughed up a lung at the GZ.
Then, I turned around.
The headstones just a little bit to your west have my surname on them. And birthdates stretching back to a time before the invention of the cardboard box (1890). I just stumbled upon my ancestors. And that made me start to think.
HOW DIFFERENT must their world have been? What must their lives have been like? These people whose graves I just tiptoed over, what would they say if I were to meet them? How can I take all of this amazing technology, like my old GPSr, for granted, when they didn't have even the basic things we consider 'necessities' today?
I want you to go out and have fun participating in our sport, a sport in which a device the size of a palm sends and receives signals from thirty-something of the thousands of pieces of metal we have put up in space. But while you enjoy the cache and this high-tech activity, think about the past, think about your ancestors, think about how the world got where it is today, and leave us a note on this cache page with your thoughts.
