Geocache Description:

This site commemorates one of the more grisly events in early Austin history.

The monument at this site used to be further east just off 51st street at Old Manor Road. I remember Boy Scout hikes that ended at the monument to prove that the tale that had been related as we walked along the creek was indeed true. I'm glad that when development forced the city to move the monument that it was placed in a more prominent and accessible spot.

After visiting this cache, a google search for the name on the monument will provide several links where you can read about the entire gruesome episode.

Well, after complaints from the neighborhood, the monument for Josiah Pugh Wilbarger was moved to the Wilbarger family cemetery in Bastrop.

This is a virtual cache. Near the coordinates of this cache is a large gnarly tree. The tree has two tree tags on the trunk, each with a number. To claim this virtual, please submit the lesser number. Thanks.
