Only The Lonely can be found strolling around Grangegorman these days. In particular, Grangegorman Lower, despite being one of the widest thoroughfares in the city, is completely deserted.
This part of the north inner city has for the past 250 years been home to institutions - hospitals, army barracks, prisons, shelters, and especially asylums, the most notable being the huge psychiatric hospital, known as St. Brendans for the past 50 years but prior to that it was the Richmond asylum. In the year 1896, there were 2,375 inmates. Thus, the many long high walls in the area. High as in 30 feet high in places. Today, there are only 100 inmates.
Big institutions continue to dominate the landscape - the HSE centres, Dublin City Council waste disposal, Dublin Bus in Broadstone, the courts complex in the old Richmond Hospital to name but a few.
The future is also destined to be dominated by a big institution - Dublin Institute of Technology plans to move its entire campus to the old St. Brendan's grounds, 56 acres in total, by September 2017. The Grangegorman Development Agency was established in 2006, and the entire area is planned for redevelopment. The joining-up of the Luas Red Line with the Luas Green Line involves the construction of the Luas Broombridge Line. Among the new stations planned are the Grangegorman and Broadstone DIT stations.
The future certainly looks bright, but it remains to be seen how the State's impecunious circumstances will impact on the timetable.
As matters stand, Only The Lonely can be seen once eveningtime arrives.
The cache is small but lonely.
